How to start freelancing as a designer or video editor
Practical first steps for new designers and editors.
Freelancing means taking projects from clients on your own terms. Many designers and video editors start this way, even while studying. These are practical first steps.
1. Build a small portfolio
Clients want to see your work. Make 5 to 8 pieces you are proud of: logos, posters, social media posts or short edited videos. Practice projects count when you are starting.
2. Pick a focus
It is easier to be known for one thing, such as logos for small businesses or reels for creators, than for everything.
3. Find your first clients
Start close to home: local shops, classes, events and people you know. Show your portfolio and ask what they need.
4. Agree the work in writing
Write down what you will deliver, how many changes are included, the deadline and the price. It protects both sides.
5. Keep learning
Tools and trends change. Keep practising and keep adding new work to your portfolio.
Freelancing takes effort and results vary. A solid skill is the best starting point: see our graphic design course and video editing course.
